Toni Sancho ‘Don’t Wanna Break Your Heart!’

London-based artist shares her first single from upcoming EP and fuses her cultures together for a dreamy production.

It is clear that Toni Sancho finds solace and her identity through songwriting and music. Following up the post-breakup and pandemic inspired single “Survive!”, the artist’s latest single shifts musically, but retains the heavy and loving heart which Sancho wears proudly.

Don’t Wanna Break Your Heart!” is the first single from Sancho’s upcoming EP via her own label Blue Daisy and continues the emotional journey of reaching a point where hope for change isn’t enough. The heavy decision of walking away has been apparent in the last two singles and it’s a refreshing aspect to hear that healing isn’t immediate. A quality many listeners can relate to especially through the poetic lyrical composition. Lines such as “A gentle heart is worth its weight in gold/ I saw him leave the house and lose control” immediately drives the contrast between two minds and hearts.

And as the dissolution of a relationship can be experienced through the single, the production focuses on another aspect of healing for the artist: a crossroad of the two cultures which raised Sancho — Caribbean and British.

“There was great relief in this for me as a musician and as a person,” shares Sancho. “I couldn’t find a way to reconcile the two cultures before this point. I always felt other.”

Dramatic strings open the track before flourishing into a Caribbean rhythm via traditional Soca drums. It’s not entirely warm, as the dramatization in orchestration adds a bit of sadness and cooler tones. Sancho’s velvet vocals and thick, emotive delivery ache and are tangled in the aftermath, but are always in control; an aspect of Sancho’s overall delivery that offers a strong sense of belief. Her vocals complement the halves of the production so beautifully and as a result, creates a dreamy soundscape that marches to a resilient beat.
