Two weeks ago, artists and drag performers came together for LOVE RISING, a benefit concert for the Tennessee Equality Project, inclusion tennessee, OUTMemphis and The Tennessee Pride Chamber, produced by Live Nation. The event took place on March 20th at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN. LOVE RISING has raised over $500,000 and counting for these LGBTQAI+ organizations and continues to raise funds via its Propeller Auction. Visit Propeller HERE.
The Looking Out Foundation supported the event by accepting donations and doubling contributions received, up to a maximum of $100,000 and continues to also receive donations via their site.
“The impressive lineup not only brought together an array of pop, indie-rock, Americana and country performers, some of whom move in overlapping orbits, but not all of whom would ordinarily share the same stage — it counted as the state’s largest gathering to date of LGBTQIA+ people and allies who oppose the legislation, reinforcing for the thousands that packed the arena that they, too, speak for The Volunteer State,” said NPR.
Since 2015, Tennessee has enacted more anti-LGBTQIA+ laws than any other state in the country. The latest of these are Senate Bill 3 and House Bill 9 — two anti-LGBTQIA+ bills that ban all performances deemed male or female impersonation otherwise known as “drag” from taking place on any public property in the state, as well as in any location where people under 18 could be present.
