Calgary-based garage-rock duo, Miesha Louie and Sean Hamilton, better known as Miesha and The Spanks return with their first single of the year, “It’s My Year.”
Fitting for January, the latest release follows “Dig Me Out” and “I Can’t Wait,” and is taken off their upcoming full-length album Unconditional Love slated for release April 14, 2023 via Mint Records.
On the single, the duo form an animated anthem to embrace the oddities in yourself and reclaim your moment, and in this case, your year. Leading with a signature rock n’ roll count, distortion, and Louie’s lively vocals, the single basks in its pop embellishments while staying true to their grooves.
Hamilton’s precision and flexibility behind the kit adds to “It’s My Year” charm, while the explosive chorus breaks loose and shimmers in pride. The breaks on the track give the prominent chorus enough room to breathe and emboldens the garage rock production and track’s messaging.
“I started this song as sort of an ode to my niece who was having a hard time with some friends in her small town, and I wanted to pump her up a little,” says Louie. “But it also brought me back to when I was a pre-teen and having my own trouble with friends in my small town, and at first you always feel like you’re the problem, the weird one, but ultimately you’ve just got imagination and big ideas and you want more out of life. So this song’s really for all the weirdos who want more.”
