Tianna Esperanza shares her latest powerful single “Lone Child” featuring Valerie June ahead of her long-awaited BMG debut album, Terror, due February 17, 2023.
“Lone Child” opens with a gripping chant that addresses isolation and washes it away, centering the track in sound and in spirit. While there are verses that add dimension and context (“Lone sister, you’ll find your home soon”), the significant force of strength is this chant which becomes the track’s chorus.
It builds within the two-minute mark and takes on different forms thanks to the collaboration between the artists’ emotive and multi-facet vocals. Growing with in its own power, the transformation emerges as a lonely echo into the arms of support that came before, and will come after, its arrival. “Lone Child” and its frame of mind is beautiful and speaks through a consciousness that has been waiting to be recognized — a feat of great delivery by Esperanza.
“I had been holding on to the chant (chorus) part for years before I brought it to Valerie June,” says Esperanza. “I think she asked me what it meant, and I realized the song was special because it was not meant to understand but to feel. ‘Lone Child’ is an expression of my Black American soul, yearning to know my roots and belong. Together, Valerie and I added English verses that explore our feelings on sisterhood, loneliness, and finding your tribe.”
Esperanza will perform songs from Terror on tour with Mick Flannery in February, including an album release show on Feb. 17 at Los Angeles’ Hotel Cafe. Pre-save the album here.
