Argentinian/Australian punk-rock band The Maggie Pills share their latest single “Rip My Heart Out,” taken off the Lickety Split 7” co-release with fellow Melbourne band, The Miffs, out Friday, February 3 via Tuff Cuff Records.

After founding members, Delfi Sorondo and Mario Perez moved to Australia in 2019, The Maggie Pills have set a reputation for themselves through live shows and their voice on topics such as destruction of land, displacement of rightful owners, discrimination and sexism.

On “Rip My Heart Out” the track mirrors the relationship between the wounded child and the same adult who attempts to fill and work through that void. Short, jagged verses split between an adolescent’s innocent plea to aged anger. It carries vulnerability and therapeutic caterwauls that bounces from the vitality of the track to its transparent lyrics: “But I love you just so much it makes me whole / Reach into my grief, lift me from within / How can I feel better? Rip my heart out.”

According to The Maggie Pills lyricist and frontwoman Delfi Sorondo, “Rip My Heart Out” lyrically draws from the often-symbiotic existence of love and pain in childhood, and the way those memories interfere with romantic affairs in later life.

“‘Rip My Heart Out’ revolves around the love we received (or didn’t receive) from our parents, and how that intertwines with the way we live through romantic love when we become adults,” says Sorondo. “It’s the people we love the most that hold our hearts and the most power to hurt us.

“The song is about that complex presence of both pain and sadness reigning over those needs that were never met, and how there is also a big love and desire to always have that person in our lives because they are a part of us.”

Along with the single, the band also shared a stop-motion video for the single by local video maker and musician, Kalindy Williams (Hearts and Rockets, Orbit Arcade).

“Rip My Heart Out” acts as the last new music from the band this year before unveiling more for 2023.

Pre-orders for the physical 7″ are available now via the Tuff Cuff e-store.
