Laufey captivated a packed venue of hopeful and elated fans during Sunday’s sold out show at The Moroccan Lounge. The night brought out Adam Melchor and Laufey’s twin sister, Junia Jonsdottir, on violin, with Madeline the Person kicking off the evening.

“You like jazz?,” Laufey laughed as she asked the crowd. “If you haven’t figured it out, I really like jazz.” The artist’s charm moved between each track, sharing key moments of inspiration and playfully moving with the comments of the crowd. Laufey’s wit navigated from appreciation to the love received to humorous quips in response to crowd cries of “step on my neck!”
Despite any unusual request from the crowd, Laufey’s demeanor was charged with grace and endearment. She was the lead storyteller, bearer of time as she took the crowd scene to scene through each note all to the backdrop of jazz and velvet vocals.

Opening with the same love received, the tender and stripped down vibrancy of “I Wish You Love” set the tone of the artist’s set. Swiftly moving to “Magnolia,” Laufey shared the track’s origins, which were comprised as a “love letter to friends who don’t know how beautiful they are.” Loving fans echoed the song’s sentiment in response, singing in unison throughout the venue. The magical reception of Laufey and the intimacy of live music came full circle in the dark space of The Moroccan Lounge.
An earnest performer, Laufey, had the room enamored with each line and backstory. We heard the budding truth of a shitty date on the self-proclaimed diss-track “James,” to feelings of falling behind as all her friends were falling in love on the aptly titled and unreleased track, “Falling Behind,” noting she was going through her Bossa nova obsession. To her fans though, there were no flaws or reason to be falling behind, as trickles of motivational lines were carried from the crowd to onstage: “It’s because no one deserves you!”
“No, it’s because I wrote a diss-track after one date.”
And as a self-proclaimed “hopeless romantic,” the artist transitioned into the tender affirmation, “Dear Soulmate.”
Despite the euphoric idea of love, Laufey’s sincerity was at its best on the track “Best Friend.” Sharing that she had never been in love, the emotion was fueled by her love and relationship with her sister, Junia Jonsdottir. Coming to the states to bless the performance with her violin, the two brought out the magic and different elements which love carries.
Approaching the end, Laufey decided to send-off the crowd with a lullaby and favorite jazz standard, “Two Sleepy People,” and with ease, silenced movement. The sea of people who filled up each space and saw no end but the Moroccan’s side doors dared not to leave early.
Laufey’s tracks are dreamy slow burners, which fit the cold Los Angeles night, but the vigor of the artist is the warm complement which mesmerizes live.
The artist gushed with love, a guitar, and a fresh haircut, but most importantly with stories. Laufey introduced a whole new generation to the spirit of jazz, and through her art, an incredibly talented story teller who we can’t wait to see and hear the next move.
