From the materials used to the brand behind it, the techniques playable, and the durability, a cello may be priced fairly but expensively. When investing in a cello, is it worth paying for its value?

From a non-cellist perspective, all cellos look the same. But to be frank, it actually differs in construction as well as the price range. Expensive vs Inexpensive

Expensive

Quality & Material

Over time, cellos progressed in their material. From woods, fiber, and aluminum, cellos come in all kinds of variants. Still, the most dominant are woods, specifically the Pernambuco.

When shopping for a cello, it is best to check its materials. It should have spruce wood for the top portion, maple for beauty and stability, and an adjustable endpin. There is no definite price for these things since it will depend on the brand that you are aiming for. Other things to consider are rosewood and boxwood.

Maintenance

Cellos are intricate instruments and might be needing maintenance from time to time especially the expensive ones. You can do it yourself, or consult a professional luthier instead. Do not forget to buy accessories to ensure smooth playability. Basic accessories include soft cloth, rosin, casing for storage, and other equipment for proper handling.

Cost

A high-end cello may range starting from $10,000 and may go high until $25,000. For this price, expect to get a premium cello with the best wood specifically designed to play certain techniques. They often come in an unusual cello body, too.

Inexpensive

Quality & Material

Inexpensive types of cellos may also be made from woods, fibers, and aluminum. The difference is, the quality is not as durable and sturdy as the ones in the expensive range. However, do not be discouraged! There are pros and cons of getting inexpensive cellos rather than splurging money into a massive financial commitment.

If you are just new to cello, then getting an inexpensive student model might be your best choice. In this way, you are not participating in wasting a big amount of money, and just in case you want to quit this commitment, at least the money spent did not break the bank.

Maintenance

Regardless of buying an inexpensive cello, you still need to buy accessories to ensure that your newly-bought cello will last what it is worth. For instance, get a microfiber cloth to run through after every use, rosin for the hair, and a case to prevent it from being damaged. Have monthly check-ups to a professional service too if you have extra bucks.

Cost

For $1,000, you can already have a standard quality cello. Upgrading would cost up to $3,000 if you have room for that. But overall, an inexpensive cello ranges from a thousand dollars and would be a maximum of $3,000.

Conclusion

Whatever price range of a cello you may be getting, it all boils down to which is right for you. A cello should be comfortable to play, lightweight, and suits your personality. You may find these qualifications in either expensive ranges or affordable ones. Apart from the cello itself, you must also invest in a quality cello bow that fits your cello, as well as your expertise as a cellist. If you’re planning to visit a music store, make sure to try it out before you purchase to know if you are comfortable playing with it. Lastly, always practice good posture while playing the instrument and keep up your passion in music to enhance your playing skills.
