Ayane Yamazaki(山﨑彩音)returns with a sparkling composition hailing to the sounds of City Pop with her take of the ’80s track “MAHOU O OSHIETE (魔法をおしえて).”
The 21-year-old Japanese singer-songwriter, who usually takes to a more organic, indie sound throughout her discography, such as the alt-rock call back to the ’90s, “The Way You Make Love,” pleasantly surprises throughout “MAHOU O OSHIETE” and its optimistic tone. Yamazaki sticks to all the elements that made the City Pop genre thrive in the ’80s and flourishes in the bubble-gum heavy dosage of synths.
Arrangement wise, Yamazaki finds a sweet spot between her usual dream-pop and more somber tones with the unique commercialization of J-pop. Yamazaki’s vocals are iridescent at first and continues to radiate by the hook for a magical and playful track.
“When I was still dreaming, I was feeling my way to tomorrow,” says Yamazaki. “The beginning of this song is what I am now in a still innocent voice; Singing with a minimal and cute sound and mood. ‘Tell me the magic,’ earnestly hopes. I hope you enjoy such a personal sound. This song has magic. I am honored to be able to sing.”
