Coming fresh off her voicenotes EP, Alaina Castillo releases an equally emotive visual to accompany leading track “just a boy.” Finding herself in a scenario soaked in pink lighting and dreamlike tones, she expresses a sense of anguish and disappointment as her voice guides the listener through a story of heartbreak. The lyrics recall a very authentic experience that comes with falling for another person; expectations. As she croons with her dulcet vocals “I know it all too well, ‘Cause you’re just a boy, you go from careful to wild,” you can’t help but also be disarmed by that same sense of despondency that comes when you expect more from another person.
Castillo encapsulates a unique narrative, one that has allowed the artist to accumulate a massive following in the past year. At such a young age she evokes an emotional scale and astounding vocal range that has placed her at the forefront of rising Latinx pop stars. Her sincerity as an artist has driven her to honoring her Mexican American heritage through bilingual compositions. Working with acclaimed writers like RØMANS (Lewis Capaldi, Ella Mai, Demi Lovato, Khalid) and boasting features on coveted Spotify playlists like Spotify’s Pop Rising and ¡Viva Latino! 2020 is proving to be Castillo’s year.
