Montreal-based indie art rock band Braids share their lead single and video “Young Buck” taken from their forthcoming album Shadow Offering due April 24 via Secret City Records. The tantalizing wall of electrical bursts speak highly of a lustful pull, decorated in the avant-garde manner that is Braids. Paired alongside its very theatrical visual companion, “Young Buck” is a whimsical version of animalistic wants and needs.

“We wrote this song to capture the nervous anticipation of desire, the delicate chase of seduction, the highs and lows of obsession, and the humor in between,” stated singer Raphaelle Standell-Preston. “To want to possess someone, make them desire you, fall for you, only to learn that to lust is not to love.”

Directed by Kevin Calero, “Young Buck” takes a light approach. The video sees actors mediate for an audition on the stage, and hopefully in the bedroom. Standell-Preston’s vocals innocently sets the scene early on with a sing-song method, rapidly placing each word upon melodic twists in each verse. It reads as a narrative to this play called life, pulling in spotlight visual cues to isolate each nod of self-pleasure.

There’s a domineering exhaustion by Standell-Preston, who enjoys the toxicity she is being drawn towards, admitting that the pleasure is found during the waiting game. The blunt lines of “the chase” become in itself an intoxicating mantra that is executed buoyantly on the track’s hook. “Young Buck” turns into an expansive production of keys, heart pounding thoughts, and bright chords that sway to the likes of a warm daydream.

What seems to be a crucial story for the band’s forthcoming album, produced by Chris Walla of Death Cab For Cutie, the remaining 8-tracks pick apart failures to love and be loved, drenched in the remainder of positivity. “There’s more hopefulness in this record than anything else I’ve written,” said Standell-Preston. “I think the songs are more human, more tangible, more honest.”
