Nané Honors ‘Imperfect Love’ With Future-Funk Debut Single ‘Always On My Mind’

Only with time comes the appreciation of everything: perfection and imperfection. Nané have optimistically turned the light on the throes of love with their debut single and video “Always On My Mind.” Led by vocalist Daniel Sahad with Ian Green (guitar), Scott McIntyre (bass), Brady Knippa (drums), and David Thacker (keys), Nané came together in Sahad’s back house where the singer dubbed the group from a term of endearment by his family in the Dominican Republic. By use of the kinship familiarity to the band, Nané’s selective attention to detail allow for universal themes to be developed, such as “imperfect love” on their single.
First listen, “Always On My Mind” carries an essence of Elton John’s “Bennie And The Jets” thanks to chopped keys that are hesitantly felt with each stroke. Quickly being put to rest with a taste for a future-funk palette, Sahad’s vocals playfully drip with a higher register before breaking into their powerhouse, silvery form. Mirroring excessive thinking, velvety vocals liken to the track’s extended guitar solo and punchier drums before skipping onward to wistful whistles that warmly close the track.
For its visual counterpart, Rebecca Mendoza’s direction showcases the reality of perspective. Set at a reunion, the video retraces an aged daydream that bleeds into present time. Featuring Jed Lee, time catches up and cleverly turns to another set of eyes that carry their own aged daydream of Lee. Sahad explains, “I think we’re conditioned to pursue love. Sometimes we find it in the wrong place, but even the wrongest of places have something to celebrate.”
Despite how much time goes by, there seems to be a sense of hope and gratitude for the eyes that didn’t return the look and for the ones that stayed hushed in the corner. Nané’s celebration and own take on these universal threads are sure to echo on their debut album in 2020.
