Mikal Cronin’s resume boasts of collaborations with artists to the likes of Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, King Tuff, and Shannon & the Clams. And with many full-lengths and singles under his own name since 2011, the Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist’s return this year is a welcoming embrace of alt-rock that was vibrant years ago.
Acting as the third single from Cronin’s upcoming LP, SEEKER, due October 25 via Merge Records, “I’ve Got Reason” floats near the undercurrents of psych rock, with a tinge of grunge-slacked ethos. Swimmingly harmoniously together, streaks of neo-pop counters the eagerness in vocals and grating guitar chords, but not enough which the abrasiveness of the track is gone. The track’s tempo patterns are stamped with a cognitive dissonance, rising and falling with each thought, climatically shinning on the expansive chorus. The shifts in dynamics cut through mainstream structures for a cold cut of indie. Paired with a color flared visual, soaked in inverted obscurity, “I’ve Got Reason” is a self-indulgent for listeners.
