Atlanta’s indie and neo-soul artist, Shai Nowell, shares his visual for “Sunkissed” taken off his 2018 EP, Please Tame Me, which features the iridescent vocals from songstress Nai Br.XX. The Jackson Laurie direction, with co-direction credits by Nowell, puts blissful summer days throughout Atlanta on display. Warm upon each listen, “Sunkissed” meets a listener at the start of falling in love and peacefully into a happy-go-lucky blanket.
Nowell’s layered vocals rides a textured production, rich with bright, rustic chimes and a resonance filled snare crack that I never thought could bring as much joy until now. Complemented by Nai Br.XX’s vocals, the shared dynamics of each artist’s tone is a pleasant and natural immersion of sounds.
“How the song came about is that when I wrote and produced the whole thing, I was listening to a lot of Pharell and was really inspired by it at the time,” explains Nowell. “So I wanted to add that same syncopation to the song. I produced it then wrote the song, then recorded the reference track, sent it to Nai, then had Nai come with me to the studio to record it. As we were recording we decided that it would be better as a duo so we ran with it!”
For the visual, the translation transferred neatly. Led by Laurie and Nowell’s guidance, the video is a visual representation of happiness. Surrounded by friends, lovers, including cameos by social media comedian Hampton and rapper 6 Dogs, “Sunkissed” is just that — a brief moment of of enjoying life without harping on any repercussions.
