Palehound, led by the musings of Ellen Kempner, announces her new album Black Friday set to be released June 7 via Polyvinyl Record Co. To heighten anticipation of the artist’s third album, Kempner shares a loving track and video from the album, diving into a hopeful glee of change and support.
Written for Kempner’s partner during his transitioning process, Kempner’s first person narrative and tangled thoughts are reaffirming nods of love: “And my friend if you want me to / I’ll call you Aaron, I can, I can, I can, I can, I can.” Even though Kempner’s “Aaron” is a character that represents Kempner’s partner, it isn’t specific to his experience, more so the general change in our bodies.
“It’s about learning to be comfortable in our skins, whether that means changing our bodies or mindsets. Robert Kolodny directed the video and captured this theme perfectly through portraying physical insecurity as living in an unruly, amorphous body and gradually shedding it,” explains Kempner.
Emerging on the track as a beacon of support, Kempner’s light vocals sway adoringly upon the indie-rock production. Visually innocent and endearing, the shedding of past skins and masks, which the world sees, is put to rest for the true version underneath. Featuring Kempner and Maggie Toth as the ragged dolls, sporting masks created by Gaudmother, the connecting threads from one to another is a beautiful representation of unconditional love.
Following the release of the album, Palehound is set to go on a fall tour with Big Thief
