Kat Myers ‘Voices Carry (‘Til Tuesday Cover)’

Kat Myers warmly covers 'Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry."

The Americana heart that lives in Kat Myers has been prevalent since her initial welcoming into the world with band, The Buzzards. As the Ohio native, and now LA transplant, re-emerges into the music world solo, the introductory single becomes a powerful statement of reflection. Covering ‘Til Tuesday’s slightly ominous new wave single “Voices Carry,” Myers transmutes a similar awakening, originally brought to the light by Aimee Mann, with an all female band.

“I hadn’t heard the song in years, and then all of a sudden I’d turn on the radio, and it would be on. I’d walk into a store, and there it was in the background. It was stalking me,” she says on the selection of the track. “I’ve been writing and writing, and reflecting, and writing some more, but it became clear that this cover would be my first release.”

Transforming the original synth heavy production to a warmer and dreamier tone, Myers’ version plays on the artist’s honeyed and rustic vocals. Featuring Cornelius, Liv Slingerland, Elizabeth Goodfellow, and Allee Futterer, “Voices Carry” alludes certainty and builds with each verse. Co-produced by Callum Barter (Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile) and Jess Cornelius (Teeth & Tongue), there’s a thick undertone of starting over that emits from the cover. Paying homage to Mann’s deep lyrics, the words are able to see a renewed light and take on a similar cloak of strength.

“I found myself surrounded by extremely gifted and inspiring female artists this year. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, there has grown this unspoken bond between women, and in an industry that has been traditionally male dominated, it was refreshing to all of a sudden realize that us women can converge together, and elevate one another.”
