Stretching a cinematic scope within the first gentle seconds of its opening, O Future‘s “Smell You” embarks on a sensual soundtrack. Previously dubbed under the name OOFJ, Katherine Mills Rymer, South Africa, and Jens Bjornkjaer, Denmark, now reside in Los Angeles as the electronic duo O Future and embellish their unconventional sound. Taken from their upcoming album titled Voyer, produced by the duo, “Smell You” is a natural sensation of pleasure from scent which carries a stigma among the other senses, yet retains a fuller weight of satisfaction in the process.
“The intimacy of being close enough to smell someone, but not actually following through. There is a melancholy to that,” states the band. Reminiscent of the soundtrack to the freeing and seductive throes of an Austin Powers film, the charm and quirk is as equal to the secret agent. Bjornkjaer’s background in classical music and scoring comes alive on “Smell You” as the track is riddled with symphonic builds and skillfully placed falls. Paired with Rymer’s composition and angelic vocals, there’s an unmatched chemistry between the two that is heard prominently within their music.
“I just want to smell you” swarms the melodic and dreamy, disco sheen which is unleashed by Rymer’s yearning vocals. Evolving into a more modern, electronic base, the track becomes solidified with its dance nature. Fading into dream ripples once more, the track is rousing with bewitching consciousness that lingers in one’s head, begging for another listen.
“Smell You” is taken from their upcoming album titled Voyeur produced by themselves, mixed by David Tolomei (Future Islands, Dirty Projectors) and features the drummer from Trentemoller, the drummer from Chet Faker and the Royal Danish Orchestra.
