There’s something extremely alluring biting into forbidden fruit and the fall that might occur. Los Angeles’ multi-faceted duo return with a passionate sliver of suspended thoughts driven through the webs of electronic-rock. Gabby Bianco and Jason Rosen continue to explore a myriad of sounds and textures, exhilarating listeners along the way with each release. Regardless of what direction the two seem to embody there’s always something sultry, stirring. “Hot Damn” is a testament to Smoke Season’s trademark burst of melodic charm, all while boiling around human nature.
“‘Hot Damn’ is about your lust hitting a fever pitch during a wet, hot American summer,” explains the duo. “We wrote the song in less than an hour and based the melodies around two vocal samples that Gabby roughly recorded and effected —a pitched up ‘Hot Damn’ and pitched down ‘Baby.’ We loved the rough nature of the samples and ended up using the originals in every chorus.”
Brewing within seconds, “Hot Damn” gets straight to the point. “Oh my, you’re everything, that I dreamed and more,” carefully sings Bianco. Playfully, she continues her repertoire of muted attraction — “Define me like a dictionary” — noting the track’s rising synths about to reach their euphoric release. Trickling and charged guitar progressions provide a fuller substance, slightly skewed to the pop aroma. The isolated break further excites with finger snaps and a cabin-fever toned Bianco, gearing for the final dosage of overlay. Drawing inspirations from The Sandlot, OutKast, and Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, “Hot Damn” and its magnetic construction leads ones imagination down a blissful road when hesitation is removed.
