Mondo Cozmo Illustrates the Ideals to Become ‘Your Motherfucker’

Mondo Cozmo's latest EP, 'Your Motherfucker,' is just that: yours for the taking. An alternative and heartfelt rock sound that strays from previous tracks, illustrating the distinction between moniker and man.

Continuing to enthrall and entice through a variety of textures, Mondo Cozmo’s latest offering, Your Motherfucker, is a cathartic shot of alternative rock that leaves one blistering with contemplative thoughts. Following the successful 2017 full length, Plastic Soul, Philadelphia-born, Los Angeles-based artist, Josh Ostrander and his musings as Mondo Cozmo, have easily become a household name for blurring the expected. A stray of what we’ve heard on Plastic Soul, Ostrander’s distinction outside the covering of Mondo Cozmo comes alive during the 4-track compilation. Touching on moments that yet weren’t materialized, we see Ostrander fueling his folk-rock blend delicately into high paced tempo switches that pair cleanly with the heartfelt rock, and introspective writing.

The leading title track gears the EP towards the attitude and persona we want Mondo Cozmo to personify. Walking a fine line of a sadistic relief, Ostrander’s confident vocals growl with a dominant passion and bounces from the electronic components, adding an industrial rust to the overall atmosphere. Trailing off into the realms of what Ostrander wishes to be — “Your ride or die bitch, your motherfucker…the love song you sing when you’re making love to him” — all seem to be the darker shade that underlines us all. An addictive melody takes control of the track and truly bursts as a welcoming of what is to come next.

Tonight Tonight” becomes the loud, cinematic anthem, constantly riding on a wave of flourishing beats. The more upbeat, and inclusive track on the EP, picking apart feel good notions and encouraging rhythms. While “Hey Steven” swings to a rooted sentiment that clings to Ostrander’s brass, and melodic vocals. Acoustics are prominent beneath the electric twangs, grazing the sustained tone. Full percussion resonates the track’s conviction, leaning towards a hearty and pensive lyrical stance.

The most heartfelt track on the EP that effortlessly defines the moment of instant  attraction would be the closer, “Sold.” Ostrander revisits a self-inflicted view, to let’s say being one’s motherfucker, noting how he is “Always running, I’m always leaving,” exposing a raw truth. “From the moment I saw you, I was sold” — which bears repeating in the misty and cautious delivery of a stuttered percussion, electro-soul layering, and tantalizing feel. “Sold” quickly encapsulates and clinches the previous tracks in a perfect restitution of what Your Motherfucker wanted to display: relatability on both sides of the spectrum, and Mondo’s and Ostrander’s clear reintroduction.
