On a quest for the perfect balance between vulnerability and strength, Canadian Alexander Vincent is finally giving voice to his inner songwriter. As the drummer for the Toronto band Magic!, Vincent spent several years touring the world with the band following the huge success of their single “Rude.” Though he had summited a great peak of success in the eyes of most, he soon realized that there were many creative mountains left for him to conquer. In exploring his creativity, Vincent has discovered the importance of opening himself up to emotions and disregarding the societal norms of feigning indifference. Drawing huge inspiration from electronic music and R&B, Vincent seeks to also incorporate organic instruments into his compositions in order to keep an element of physicality in his sound and his live shows.
His first solo single “I Won’t” is a sweeping electronic composition that is as simple in its message as it is richly textured. Recorded during a tour with Magic! in Japan, the song intimates the frustration of not being able to fully express oneself and feeling creatively and emotionally stifled. The lyrics consist mainly of the line “I won’t say a word / You’ve already heard me / I won’t say a word / You’re not even listening” repeated and echoed in variations as the beat slowly develops. Layers of sound are added, causing the track to swell with texture and then contract again in a pattern of buildup and release. Wrapped in a package of sonic brilliance, the message is clear: where words fail, music can speak for itself.
