Soft Lions “Freeway” – The San Diego trio return with the single “Freeway” in anticipation for their new album XOXO, out Oct. 28th. The track takes a sentimental approach on “losing a friend knowing there’s nothing you can do about it,” while still blending their beloved, grizzy reto-rock flare. The track’s upbeat melody circles around a 60s psych dance on the beach, incorporating the nostalgic recording, punchy drumming, and “jangly” guitars, that makes this track so enjoyable.
Bartholin “Paraphones” – Bartholin is composed of the duo, Drew Danburry and Cat Leavy, who create sweet indie tracks that last more than a day. “Paraphones,” their new single from their self-titled recent release, puts the duo on our radars for their simplicity, warm sound, and relatable feel within the track. Hailing from Provo, Utah, Danburry has toured with a decent amount of artists, as well as being a part-time barber, and is now focusing primarily on Bartholin. As for the track, it’s a slow and driving sensation with a subtle approach on vocals, touching on the sensitive part of a listener. A questioning track “expecting more” and evaluating this through layers of vocals, warm tones, and perfect placement into the changing seasons.
KAN WAKAN “I Would” – Didn’t think it was possible, but KAN WAKAN does it again. The Los Angeles-based composer and producer once again manages to manipulate senses, translates thoughts, and redefines the possibility of sounds. Gorgeous vocals are provided by Elle Olsun, who stuns with her sheer ability to throw out a sense of vulnerability, and strength at the same time. The chemistry of the two ignites into a track that dives further into the many changes that Kan Wakan was going through at the time of the track’s creation.
“‘I Would’ was the first song I started working on for the new album. My friend Elle Olsun came into the studio and I played her a nylon guitar riff I had recorded on my phone. It had been on playback in my mind for a while, and when she heard it she just went along and started singing this melody and we bounced ideas back and forth.
There was a lot of change going on in my life at the time and ‘I Would’ drew on that curiosity. It stirs nostalgia and anxiety, like a creek meeting a river, rushing and chaotic but held tight by the undercurrent”
Swan Levitt “ALIVE” – English songwriter, Swan Levitt, hailing from Wight, UK, brings us an emotionally driven, and atmospheric ballad that quiets rationality with his latest track “Alive.” Levitt plays on simple chords, and drives it with emotive vocals in par with touching lyrics that, in theory, brings the track “alive.” The folk-aspect of the track leads Levitt down a warm tone without being predictable in sound. The intimacy of the track, heard in the rise and fall of Levitt’s vocals, is the key to the appeal of “Alive”- proving if the heart isn’t there, the pieces will crumble.
Aloric “Fate” – London-based artist, Aloric, draws on other worldly inspirations, a raw acoustic structure, and an orchestral, post-rock sound on the latest track “Fate.” The build on this one is intense and will literally throw a listener in a loop as they try to catch up to the assortment of sounds that they just heard. What starts as a low, and slow lull, builds into something beautiful, cinematic, and intense, truly captivating the essence of what is Fate- the good and bad. Aloric’s vocals will suddenly transform into an experimental tone that somehow fits with the momentum of the track. Some parts will be hauntingly beautiful, others will be quiet, but all will be powered by emotion and a hard-hitting sound.
