Sungaze trio, Sol Gems, from Johannesburg, South Africa, may have made me enjoy psych-rock a little more. Struan, Gabriel, and Pano have nailed their sound and balanced the medium of surf-rock, and the alluring sounds of psychedelic with their track, “Mystery of Mind.” The track is 5 minutes of a playful melody that offers unique pieces during the course of the song, without “trying too hard” to embellish on mind-bending distortions. The vocals are perfect for the melody, and range from a garage murmur, to raised pitches, which ultimately is the source of an irresistibly catchy chorus.
The track never loses momentum, even with the soft touch of chimes in the background during the break, and may be related to the earlier time of Tame Impala. Interesting peaks of sounds toward the end, add a futuristic approach and is kept in-line with steady drumming. Sol Gems know how to get a listener’s attention without one low part or off-set piece, and create a little bit of magic for psych-rock enthusiasts.
